LED light therapy beds: what to know

Short answer

LED light therapy beds expose broad areas of skin to selected light, but the right setting, eye protection, and treatment plan depend on the device and your health.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Coverage
Beds expose broader skin areas than masks or handheld devices.
Safety check
Confirm the light type, eye protection, cleaning process, and medicines.
Do not self-treat
A changing lesion or severe reaction needs clinical assessment.

How a bed differs from a mask

A therapy bed uses multiple light-emitting diodes to cover more skin than a small handheld unit or face mask. Red and near-infrared settings are commonly discussed for skin-focused goals, while blue light may be selected for some acne-related concerns. The effects depend on wavelength, dose, distance, exposure time, and the condition being treated; a larger surface does not automatically make a session more suitable.

A bed should not be confused with a tanning unit. The provider should explain whether the device emits ultraviolet light, how the eyes are protected, how the bed is disinfected, and what the session is intended to address. A general wellness claim is not the same as a plan for a diagnosed skin problem.

Before and during treatment

Tell the provider about medicines that increase light sensitivity, a history of unusual light reactions, eye conditions, pregnancy, active skin infection, or recent procedures. Remove products that the provider says may irritate skin, follow the device’s positioning instructions, and use the supplied eye protection. Keep a record of the setting and how your skin responds so the plan can be adjusted rather than intensified on your own.

When to stop and get advice

Stop a session and ask for medical advice if you develop persistent burning, blistering, marked swelling, a spreading rash, or eye pain or visual change. Urgent assessment is appropriate for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or a severe widespread reaction. A new or changing lesion should be examined rather than treated repeatedly in a bed.

Questions to ask

Ask what light the bed emits, why it fits your goal, how your medicines affect suitability, what eye protection is required, and how a clinician will judge whether sessions are helping.
