What should you know about LED light for psoriasis?

Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin condition that can produce raised, scaly plaques, redness, dryness and itching. LED devices use visible light rather than the ultraviolet light used in some medical phototherapy. The colour, energy level and exposure schedule affect what the skin receives, so a home mask and a clinic device should not be treated as interchangeable.

A light session may be considered an add-on when symptoms are limited, but it may not reach thick plaques or control disease outside the treated area. Persistent scaling, cracking or widespread rash still needs assessment because psoriasis can require prescription creams, tablets, injections or supervised phototherapy.

Have a dermatologist confirm that the patches are psoriasis before buying a device. Share your medicines and any history of light sensitivity, because some treatments and medical conditions can make light exposure unsuitable. Follow the device instructions exactly, protect the eyes when directed, and stop if the skin becomes increasingly painful, blistered or markedly irritated.

Use a gentle cleanser and regular moisturiser to support the skin barrier. Keep a simple record of treated areas, settings and changes in itch, redness or scale. Do not increase exposure to speed results, and do not apply unapproved products immediately before a session.

Arrange a clinical review for rapidly spreading plaques, deep cracks, pus, fever, severe pain or a new rash involving the eyes, mouth or genitals. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty or a severe reaction after light exposure. A clinician should also reassess treatment if the skin worsens or joint pain and morning stiffness appear.

Ask whether the diagnosis is clear, which light type is being proposed, whether your medicines affect light sensitivity, and how improvement will be judged. Discuss alternatives if plaques are thick, widespread or affecting sleep.
