What should you know about lateral neck lump?

A lateral neck lump needs clinical assessment because its cause may range from infection to an enlarged lymph node or a cancer-related condition. The location, duration, tenderness, movement, and accompanying symptoms help guide the next step.

Lymph nodes can enlarge while the body responds to a throat, dental, skin, or respiratory infection. A lump may also arise from the thyroid or another neck structure. Head and neck cancer, lymphoma, thyroid cancer, and cancer of unknown primary are conditions clinicians may consider when examination or tests point in that direction; a lump alone does not establish a diagnosis.

Arrange an appointment if the lump persists, grows, feels firm or fixed, or has no clear recent infection. A clinician may examine your mouth, throat, thyroid, and lymph nodes, and may request imaging or a needle sample. Note when it appeared, whether it changes, and any fever, night sweating, weight change, voice change, swallowing difficulty, or ear symptoms.

Seek urgent care for trouble breathing, inability to swallow fluids, rapidly increasing swelling, or severe illness. Prompt medical review is also sensible for a persistent or enlarging lump, especially with unexplained weight loss, night sweats, coughing blood, persistent hoarseness, or a change in swallowing.

Ask what structures could be involved, whether an ultrasound or other scan is appropriate, and when a biopsy would help. Ask which changes should prompt faster review and how the plan will change if the lump shrinks, remains unchanged, or grows.
