What should you know about lateral mass fusion cervical?

The lateral masses are strong parts of the cervical vertebrae that can hold fixation hardware. A surgeon may use this posterior approach when the neck needs stability after decompression, injury, deformity, or another operation. Bone graft is placed so the treated vertebrae can heal into a more solid unit; screws and rods provide support during that process. A PEEK spinal cage is a different implant concept, and a plate and screws may be used with an anterior approach, depending on the surgical plan.

Tell the team about medicines, nicotine use, allergies, previous neck surgery, and symptoms in your arms or hands. Plan for help with washing, meals, and transport while neck movement is limited. Follow instructions about wound care, collars, lifting, sleep position, and driving. Early walking is commonly encouraged, while strenuous activity waits until healing is checked. Physiotherapy may be introduced to improve posture, shoulder movement, and safe neck function.

Contact the surgical team for fever, wound drainage, increasing redness, worsening neck pain, or new swallowing difficulty. Seek urgent care for new or worsening arm or leg weakness, loss of balance, trouble breathing, loss of bladder or bowel control, or rapidly spreading numbness. These signs need prompt assessment.

Which cervical levels need stabilisation, and why is a posterior lateral mass approach suitable? Will decompression be performed at the same time? Which graft and hardware are planned? What collar, movement, and lifting restrictions apply, and how will fusion be checked?
