What should you know about laser removal of syringoma?

Short answer

Laser removal can reduce the appearance of syringomas, but treatment needs careful diagnosis, eye-area protection, and a plan for possible recurrence or pigment change.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical appearance
Small firm bumps, often around the lower eyelids
Treatment priority
Confirm the diagnosis and protect the eyes
Possible recovery changes
Redness, crusting, or pigment change

Understanding syringomas

A syringoma is a small, firm bump arising from a sweat duct. These bumps commonly occur in clusters around the lower eyelids, although they can appear elsewhere. They are often skin-coloured or slightly yellow-brown and may remain stable for a long time. Because other lesions can look similar, examination matters before removal.

Laser energy can heat or vaporise the targeted tissue, depending on the device and settings. Around the eyes, the clinician must protect the eye and control treatment depth. Learn more about [Skin Bumps](/symptoms/skin-bumps/) and the related procedure [CO2 Laser Resurfacing](/treatments/laser-and-energy/co2-laser-resurfacing/).

Preparing for removal

Discuss whether the bumps have changed, whether you have a history of cold sores or raised scars, and whether your skin tends to darken after irritation. Ask how the eye will be protected and what cleansing, ointment, and sun protection will be needed afterward. Do not scratch healing crusts, and allow the skin to recover before using irritating products.

Laser is not the only approach. Depending on the number, size, and location of the bumps, a clinician may discuss [Electrosurgery](/treatments/surgical-dermatology/electrosurgery/). Any option can leave temporary redness or colour change, so the plan should balance cosmetic improvement with the risk of marks.

When to seek help

Contact the clinic if swelling is increasing, pain is severe or worsening, redness spreads, or there is pus, fever, or delayed healing. After treatment near the eyes, urgent assessment is needed for eye pain, vision change, light sensitivity, or difficulty opening the eye. A bump that bleeds, rapidly changes, or develops a new surface should be examined rather than treated as a known syringoma.

Questions for your doctor

Ask how the diagnosis was made, why a particular laser is suitable, how the eyes will be shielded, what pigment changes are possible for your skin, and how a recurrence or an unexpected lesion would be handled.

Questions people ask

Are syringomas the same as acne?

No. Syringomas are sweat-duct bumps and do not behave like acne spots.

Can syringomas come back after laser?

They may recur or new bumps may appear, so expectations should be discussed before treatment.
