Laser Hair Removal for Dark Skin: What to Know

The laser targets pigment in the hair follicle. Darker surrounding skin also contains more pigment, so excess heat can irritate skin or cause temporary light or dark marks. A trained clinician should assess your natural tone, tanning, hair colour, treatment area, and any history of marks after inflammation.

An Nd:YAG laser is often considered for deeper, darker skin tones because its wavelength can target follicles while limiting heat absorbed by the surface. Diode and Alexandrite devices may be appropriate in selected situations, but the choice should be individualised.

Choose a medical provider who regularly treats darker skin and can explain the device and test-spot plan. Avoid tanning before treatment, follow instructions about shaving, and do not wax or pluck the hairs being targeted. Tell the clinician about recent irritation, active rashes, medicines that increase light sensitivity, and previous pigment changes.

During treatment, cooling and a measured energy level help protect the surface. Mild warmth, redness, or follicle swelling can occur afterward. Use the recommended gentle skin care and sun protection, and avoid picking or scrubbing treated skin.

Seek medical advice if blistering, severe pain, spreading swelling, pus, or worsening dark or pale patches develop after treatment. Delay another session over irritated or infected skin until it has been assessed.
