Why tattooed skin needs care
Hair-removal lasers are attracted to pigment. Tattoo ink can absorb that energy, causing intense heat, blistering, burns, or changes to the tattoo and surrounding skin. A clinician can mark and shield the tattoo, then treat only appropriate skin around it. The same caution applies to cosmetic tattooing and recently irritated or sunburned skin.
How to prepare
Show every tattoo in or near the proposed area before treatment, including faded ink that may be easy to miss. Do not cover a tattoo yourself and assume it is protected; ask how the clinic will isolate it. Tell the clinician about tanning, pigment-changing medicines, previous laser reactions, ingrown hairs, or razor bumps. Alexandrite Laser, Diode Laser, and Nd:YAG Laser may be selected according to skin and hair characteristics, but none should be used directly over tattoo ink.
When to seek care
Contact the clinic for severe pain, blistering, spreading redness, drainage, fever, or a persistent change in the tattoo or skin colour. Delay treatment over a new tattoo until it has fully healed and the clinician confirms the area is suitable.
