Laser for sebaceous hyperplasia

Sebaceous hyperplasia consists of enlarged oil glands, often appearing as small, flesh-colored or yellowish bumps with a central dip. They commonly occur on the face and can resemble other growths, so a clinician may inspect a changing or unusual lesion closely. These bumps are usually a cosmetic concern, but squeezing them can cause irritation, scarring, or infection.

CO2 laser resurfacing can remove the surface and reduce the prominence of a selected bump. Electrosurgery uses controlled heat and may be chosen for individual lesions. Your clinician considers the number and depth of bumps, skin tone, location, and tendency to mark after injury. Keep treated skin clean, protected from sun, and free from picking during healing. New bumps can appear because the underlying tendency of oil glands remains.

Have a bump assessed if it grows quickly, bleeds, ulcerates, becomes painful, or differs from your other lesions. After treatment, report spreading redness, increasing tenderness, drainage, fever, or delayed healing. Do not self-treat an uncertain facial growth with a home device.
