What should you know about lap salpingectomy?

Short answer
Lap salpingectomy is keyhole surgery to remove one or both fallopian tubes while limiting the size of abdominal incisions.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the procedure means
A surgeon makes small openings in the abdomen, places a camera and slender instruments inside, and separates the tube from nearby tissue. The tube may be removed because of an ectopic pregnancy, a damaged or blocked tube, another gynaecological problem, or a planned risk-reducing operation. Removing a tube does not remove the ovaries; hormone production and periods can continue when ovarian function remains.
If one healthy tube remains, pregnancy may still be possible, although the reason for surgery and the condition of the remaining tube matter. A bilateral procedure prevents natural passage of eggs through the tubes and needs a separate fertility discussion.
Preparing and recovering
Before surgery, tell the team about medicines, allergies, previous operations, and any possibility of pregnancy. Arrange transport home and help with lifting, meals, and childcare. Afterward, tiredness, shoulder-tip discomfort from the gas used during laparoscopy, and soreness around the small wounds can occur. Follow the discharge instructions for wound care, bathing, activity, driving, and pain relief. Keep follow-up appointments so the team can review healing and any laboratory findings.
When to seek care
Contact your surgical team promptly for fever, worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, increasing redness or discharge from a wound, heavy vaginal bleeding, or difficulty passing urine. Seek urgent help for fainting, severe breathlessness, chest pain, or sudden intense pain, especially if pregnancy is possible.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which tube is being removed and why, whether the ovaries and uterus will remain, how the operation may affect fertility, what activity limits apply, and which symptoms should trigger an urgent call.

Questions people ask
Does salpingectomy remove the ovaries?
No. Salpingectomy removes a fallopian tube; ovary removal is a different operation.
Can pregnancy happen after one tube is removed?
Pregnancy may still be possible when an ovary and a healthy remaining tube are present, but individual factors need assessment.
