Short answer

Ladies groin pain may arise from a strained muscle, a hip-joint problem, or another pelvic or abdominal cause, so the pattern and accompanying symptoms guide next steps.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the pain can mean

Pain at the crease between the abdomen and thigh often involves the adductor muscles, especially after a sudden change in activity, a twist, or a stretch. Hip-joint conditions can cause deep groin discomfort with walking, pivoting, sitting low, or bringing the knee toward the chest. Hip impingement can irritate tissues during certain movements, while a labral tear may cause catching or clicking. Hip osteoarthritis can gradually reduce movement and make ordinary steps uncomfortable. A hernia, urinary problem, bowel condition, or gynaecological issue can also produce pain in this area, so location alone cannot identify the cause.

A groin symptom is not a diagnosis. A clinician may ask about the start of pain, menstrual or pregnancy-related context, activity, fever, urinary changes, swelling, and whether the pain travels to the back or leg.

What you can do now

Reduce the movement that clearly triggers pain for a short period, while keeping gentle walking if it remains comfortable. Avoid forceful stretching, sprinting, and deep squats until the cause is clearer. A wrapped cold pack can help after a recent strain; use it for brief periods and protect the skin. Keep a note of triggers and associated symptoms. Assessment is sensible when pain persists, returns with activity, limits walking, or follows an injury. Treatment may include a graded exercise plan, movement advice, and physiotherapy; sports physiotherapy can be useful when activity or training is involved.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening pain, fainting, heavy vaginal bleeding, a rigid or very tender abdomen, fever with marked illness, repeated vomiting, or a painful groin lump that cannot be pushed back. Seek prompt assessment for new weakness, numbness, difficulty passing urine, blood in the urine, or pain during pregnancy. Arrange a routine review if symptoms do not settle, disturb sleep, or keep returning.

Useful questions for your doctor

Could the pain be coming from my hip, adductor muscles, abdomen, urinary system, or pelvis? Which examination findings would distinguish these causes? Should I change exercise, and which movements are safe? Do I need imaging or a pelvic assessment? What symptoms should make me seek urgent care?

Questions people ask

Can groin pain come from the hip?

Yes. Hip-joint irritation can be felt deep in the groin and may worsen with pivoting, prolonged sitting, or lifting the knee.

Should I stretch a painful groin?

Avoid forceful stretching while pain is sharp or newly injured. A clinician or physiotherapist can guide a gradual programme once the cause is understood.
