Short answer

Groin pain in women may come from a muscle strain, hip irritation, joint problem or pelvic cause, so its pattern and associated symptoms guide the next step.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the pain can mean

Pain after running, changing direction, lifting or a sudden stretch can involve the inner-thigh adductor muscles. Pain felt deep in the groin, especially with hip movement, may occur with hip impingement, a labral tear or hip osteoarthritis. These conditions can present with groin pain, but the symptom alone cannot identify the cause.

Tell a clinician whether the discomfort is one-sided, linked to walking or sitting, or accompanied by clicking, catching, weakness, swelling, fever, urinary symptoms, unusual bleeding or pregnancy-related concerns. A physical examination can compare hip motion, muscle strength and tenderness.

Useful next steps

Reduce movements that clearly reproduce the pain for a short period, while keeping gentle daily movement within comfort. Avoid forceful stretching or returning to sprinting before ordinary walking and controlled hip movements feel manageable. A clinician or physiotherapist can tailor strengthening and mobility work; sports physiotherapy may help when activity or training is involved.

Note when the pain began, what you were doing, its exact location and any cycle, urinary or bowel changes. This record helps separate a musculoskeletal pattern from a pelvic or abdominal concern.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical assessment for severe or rapidly worsening pain, fainting, heavy bleeding, fever with feeling very unwell, repeated vomiting, a painful groin lump, or new pain during pregnancy. Arrange a routine assessment if pain persists, limits walking, repeatedly returns or is associated with locking, giving way or night discomfort.

Questions to take with you

Ask: Which structures could be causing this location of pain? Do my hip movements or muscle tests suggest a joint or adductor problem? Which activities should I modify, and what symptoms would change the urgency of review?
