What should you know about labyrinthitis symptoms?

Labyrinthitis is inflammation affecting the inner-ear balance system and sometimes the hearing system. Vertigo is a spinning or moving sensation; unsteadiness can make walking difficult. Nausea or vomiting may follow because the brain is receiving mismatched movement signals. Hearing may feel reduced, muffled, or distorted, and ringing can accompany it.

Symptoms can begin abruptly and may be worse when you turn your head or try to stand. The symptom pattern is useful, but it cannot confirm the cause by itself. Other inner-ear disorders and neurological problems can also produce dizziness, so a new or severe presentation should be assessed.

Sit or lie down when spinning starts, use support when walking, and clear loose rugs or clutter from your route. Keep lighting gentle and turn your head slowly. Avoid driving, cycling, ladders, and water activities without supervision while balance is affected. Small sips of fluid may be easier if nausea is present.

Record when symptoms began, whether they are constant or intermittent, which ear is affected, and any recent cold or medicine change.
