Labyrinthitis: information for patients

How the structures involved in Labyrinthitis differ from normal

Short answer

Labyrinthitis can cause sudden vertigo and imbalance, so protect yourself from falls and arrange assessment when symptoms are new or severe.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main effects
Vertigo, nausea, imbalance, and sometimes ringing or hearing change.
Safety priority
Reduce fall and driving risks while balance is unreliable.

Understanding labyrinthitis

The inner ear helps the brain interpret movement and position. Inflammation there can create a mismatch between balance signals, producing spinning, unsteadiness, nausea, and sometimes ringing or hearing change. Symptoms may follow a viral illness such as a Common Cold, although similar sensations can have other causes. Labyrinthitis is not diagnosed from one symptom in isolation.

The first phase can make standing, walking, reading, or turning the head difficult. As the brain adapts, movement may become easier, but lingering imbalance or hearing symptoms should be discussed with a clinician rather than assumed to be part of recovery.

Managing symptoms safely

During a spinning episode, sit or lie down and focus on a fixed point if that helps. Keep floors clear, use support on stairs, and avoid driving, heights, swimming alone, or operating machinery while balance is unreliable. Drink small amounts often if nausea permits. A GP Consultation can check the diagnosis, review medicines, and advise whether balance rehabilitation is suitable.

When to get help

Seek urgent help for sudden weakness, facial drooping, confusion, difficulty speaking, a severe new headache, fainting, or inability to walk safely. Sudden hearing loss, persistent vomiting, severe dehydration, or worsening symptoms after an ear infection also needs prompt review. These signs should not be explained away as labyrinthitis without an examination.

Questions for your appointment

Ask what findings support labyrinthitis, whether your hearing needs checking, when you can safely drive, whether balance exercises are appropriate, and which symptoms should trigger urgent review.

Questions people ask

Is labyrinthitis contagious?

The inner-ear inflammation itself is not something you pass directly to another person, although an infection that preceded it may be contagious.

Should I stay completely still?

Rest during severe spinning, then gradually resume safe movement as symptoms allow; prolonged inactivity can make balance recovery harder for some people.
