How long does labyrinthitis usually last?

Short answer

Labyrinthitis usually starts abruptly; the strongest vertigo may ease first, while imbalance, motion sensitivity or hearing symptoms can take longer to improve.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical start
Abrupt vertigo and imbalance
What may linger
Motion sensitivity or unsteadiness
Hearing symptoms
Should be assessed if sudden or persistent

The recovery pattern

Labyrinthitis disrupts inner-ear signals used for balance and, in some cases, hearing. At the beginning, turning the head or standing can trigger a strong spinning sensation and nausea. As the brain learns to interpret the changed signals, walking may become easier even though busy environments or quick movements still feel difficult. Ringing in the ears or reduced hearing may follow a different course from vertigo. Because several conditions cause similar symptoms, a changing or prolonged pattern should be checked rather than measured against an assumed timetable.

Making the period safer

During the acute phase, rest in a secure position, keep fluids nearby, and ask someone to help with bathing, stairs or shopping if needed. Avoid driving, cycling and ladders until you can move and react safely. When movement is tolerated, add gentle head turns and short walks gradually; a clinician or vestibular therapist can tailor exercises. Note which activities provoke symptoms and whether hearing or ringing changes. Arrange a GP Consultation if improvement stops, symptoms recur or the diagnosis remains uncertain.

When not to wait

Seek urgent care for sudden hearing loss, new weakness or numbness, facial drooping, difficulty speaking, double vision, fainting, severe headache or inability to stand. Obtain prompt advice for repeated falls, worsening symptoms, severe vomiting or new ear discharge. Urgency is based on these warning signs, not on whether another person has similar symptoms.

What to ask at an appointment

Ask whether your symptoms fit labyrinthitis, whether hearing or balance testing is needed, how to restart normal activities, and which changes require urgent review. Bring a list of medicines and describe whether the sensation is spinning, faintness or unsteadiness.
