Laboratory diagnosis of urinary tract infection

A dipstick can detect signs such as white blood cells, blood, or substances produced by some bacteria. A laboratory culture grows bacteria from the sample and can help identify which antibiotics are likely to work. Clean-catch collection reduces contamination: wash your hands, follow the container instructions, and avoid touching its inside. In some children, older adults, pregnant people, or people with repeated infections, the clinician may request a carefully collected sample or further assessment. Symptoms such as burning, frequency, lower abdominal pain, or new bedwetting help interpret the result.

Provide a fresh sample as instructed and tell the clinician about antibiotics already taken, pregnancy, kidney problems, or urinary devices. Drink normally unless you have been given different fluid advice. Take prescribed treatment exactly as directed and ask how results will be communicated. Persistent symptoms with a negative culture may need assessment for another cause, including prostatitis or irritation rather than a bacterial infection.

Seek same-day medical advice for fever, chills, vomiting, pain in the back or side, pregnancy with urinary symptoms, or symptoms in a young child. These features can accompany a kidney infection. Confusion, extreme weakness, rapid breathing, or feeling severely unwell may indicate sepsis and needs emergency care. Abdominal pain that is severe or worsening also warrants urgent assessment.
