Lab tests for pertussis

Short answer
A pertussis test usually uses a nose or throat sample to look for the bacteria, while symptoms and timing guide how the result is interpreted.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common sample
- Nasal or throat mucus
- Timing matters
- Cough duration and antibiotics affect interpretation
- Protect first
- Infants are especially vulnerable
How testing works
A clinician may collect mucus with a swab from the back of the nose. The sample can be tested for evidence of pertussis, also called whooping cough. The best test and its usefulness depend on how long the cough has been present, whether antibiotics have started, and the person’s age. A cough may be caused by several infections, so a positive or negative result is considered with the examination and illness pattern. Fever is not required for pertussis, and babies may show pauses in breathing rather than a classic whoop.
What to do while it is assessed
Tell the clinic about the cough’s start date, vomiting after coughing, breathing pauses, exposure to someone with pertussis, and vaccination history. Keep infants away from people with coughs and follow local infection-control advice. A clinician may prescribe Antibiotic Treatment to reduce spread and help protect vulnerable contacts; take it exactly as directed. Do not share leftover medicine. Household members may need assessment, especially young babies, pregnant people, or anyone with a weakened immune system. Childhood Immunisation lowers the risk of severe illness and should be discussed when appropriate.
When urgent help is needed
Seek emergency help for blue or grey lips, severe breathing difficulty, repeated pauses in breathing, collapse, or unusual sleepiness. Babies with poor feeding, choking, vomiting with coughing, or breathing changes need prompt medical assessment. Arrange timely review for a cough that comes in exhausting bouts, causes vomiting, or is worsening. Until assessed, cover coughs, wash hands, and limit close contact with infants.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which sample is suitable, when results are expected, whether treatment should begin before the result, and whether close contacts require advice. Ask how long to stay away from childcare, school, or work and when vaccination records should be reviewed.

Questions people ask
Can pertussis be tested with a blood sample?
Some tests use blood in particular circumstances, but a respiratory sample is commonly considered when a recent infection is suspected.
Is a whoop needed for diagnosis?
No. Pertussis can cause prolonged coughing without a whoop, especially in adults and vaccinated people.
