What should you know about la gout?

Short answer
Gout is an inflammatory arthritis caused by urate crystals collecting in a joint, leading to sudden pain, swelling, warmth and tenderness.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How gout affects a joint
Urate is produced when the body breaks down purines. If urate remains too high, crystals can form in and around joints and trigger an intense immune response. The big toe is well known, but gout can also affect the ankle, knee, foot or other joints. A flare may develop quickly, with skin that feels hot and movement that becomes difficult. Between flares, symptoms may settle while the underlying tendency remains.
A painful swollen joint has several possible causes, including infection and other forms of arthritis. Clinicians use the history and examination and may test joint fluid or blood when needed. Chronic kidney disease and some medicines can affect urate handling, so share your full health and medicine history.
What to do during and between flares
Rest the painful joint in a comfortable position, use a wrapped cool pack for short periods, and follow the flare treatment prescribed for you. Do not start, stop or change urate-lowering medicine without medical advice. Between attacks, review triggers, hydration, weight, alcohol and diet with a clinician rather than relying on a single food rule. Long-term care aims to prevent crystal build-up and protect joint function.
When to seek care
Seek same-day medical advice for a new hot, red, swollen joint, especially with fever, chills, feeling faint or feeling very unwell, because infection needs urgent exclusion. Get prompt help if pain is severe, the joint cannot move, or a flare is not responding to the agreed plan. Emergency care is appropriate for confusion, collapse or breathing difficulty.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the episode needs joint-fluid testing, what to take during a flare, whether urate-lowering treatment is suitable, how kidney health affects choices, and how progress will be monitored.

Questions people ask
Can gout affect the knee or ankle?
Yes. Gout can inflame several joints, including the knee and ankle, not only the big toe.
Is every swollen joint gout?
No. Infection, injury and other inflammatory conditions can look similar, so a new hot swollen joint should be medically assessed.
