What should you know about KP pimples?

A pimple is a visible bump that may be red, flesh-coloured, tender or filled with fluid. Acne can produce blackheads, whiteheads and inflamed spots, while folliculitis can cause similar bumps around hairs. Shaving-related razor bumps, hormonal acne, rosacea and perioral dermatitis can also look pimple-like. Keratosis pilaris tends to feel rough and appear in clusters, commonly on the upper arms, thighs, cheeks or buttocks, rather than behaving like a single blocked pore.

The appearance alone cannot confirm a diagnosis. A clinician may ask about skincare products, shaving, medicines, itch, pain and whether the bumps recur in the same places.

Wash with a mild cleanser, avoid squeezing, and choose non-comedogenic moisturiser and sunscreen if the area is exposed. Pause new fragranced products and avoid close shaving over irritated skin. Keep a short record of triggers, timing and body sites. If acne or inflammation is diagnosed, a clinician can match treatment to the type of lesion; LED light therapy may be discussed for selected concerns, but it is not a substitute for diagnosis.

Book a dermatology review for deep or painful bumps, repeated pus, scarring, sudden widespread spots, or lesions that do not settle. Seek prompt care for fever, rapidly spreading redness, facial swelling, eye involvement or breathing difficulty. A new pimple-like eruption after starting a medicine also deserves timely medical advice.
