What should you know about kitten constipation?

A kitten may strain, cry, squat repeatedly, or produce only small, hard pieces of stool. Sometimes the problem is reduced fluid intake, a sudden food change, swallowed material, parasites, or a bowel problem. Kittens can become dehydrated quickly, so constipation is more concerning in a very young, small, or already unwell animal.

Check whether the kitten is urinating. Straining in the litter area can be mistaken for constipation, but inability to pass urine is an emergency. A swollen or painful abdomen, repeated vomiting, marked sleepiness, or refusal to feed also needs urgent care.

Arrange veterinary advice promptly, especially if the kitten is very young or has missed feeds. Keep fresh water available and offer the usual age-appropriate food unless a veterinarian advises otherwise. Do not give human laxatives, oils, enemas, or milk as a home remedy; some products can injure a kitten or delay treatment for an obstruction.

Note the last normal stool, any straining, food and water intake, vomiting, urine output, and anything the kitten may have swallowed. Seek urgent veterinary care if the kitten repeatedly strains without producing stool or urine, has a tense or painful abdomen, vomits, refuses food, becomes weak, or seems unusually cold or sleepy. Go promptly after possible ingestion of string, plastic, medication, or another object. Dehydration is a concern when gums feel dry, the kitten is less responsive, or urine output falls.
