Kidney liver function test: what to know

Kidney testing commonly includes markers related to filtering, waste removal and salts in the blood. Results may be considered alongside urine findings, blood pressure, hydration and previous results. A single result does not describe every part of kidney health and can be affected by medicines or an acute illness.

Liver testing measures substances released into the blood when liver cells or bile pathways are affected, along with markers linked to the liver’s processing and protein-making roles. Abnormal results can occur with viral hepatitis, alcohol-related illness, medicines, gallbladder problems or other conditions; they do not identify one cause by themselves.

Ask whether you need to fast, take usual medicines, or avoid strenuous activity before the blood draw. Tell the clinician about supplements, alcohol use, recent illness, pregnancy and every prescribed or non-prescribed medicine. Keep the report and compare results only with guidance, because reference ranges and clinical context matter.

If a result is outside the expected range, follow-up may include repeat blood work, urine testing, imaging or a review of medicines. Do not stop treatment based on a result without speaking with the prescriber.

Seek prompt medical care for yellowing of the skin or eyes, severe or persistent vomiting, confusion, marked drowsiness, very little urine, swelling with breathing difficulty, or severe abdominal pain. These symptoms need assessment regardless of whether a previous test was normal.

Ask: Which kidney and liver markers were tested? What does each result mean in my situation? Could medicines, dehydration or recent illness affect it? Do I need repeat testing or imaging? Which symptoms should lead me to seek urgent help?
