Ketotifen for asthma: what to know

Ketotifen is an antihistamine with a mast-cell stabilising effect. Depending on the formulation and local prescribing practice, it may be considered when allergic symptoms contribute to airway irritation. It is not a fast-acting bronchodilator and should not be relied on for sudden wheezing, chest tightness or breathing difficulty. Asthma control usually involves an individual plan that may include a preventer and a reliever, with treatment chosen according to symptoms and triggers.

Take ketotifen only as prescribed and follow the product instructions for timing. Drowsiness can occur, so see how it affects you before driving or operating machinery.
