Keloid types and how they differ

Some keloids are small, round bumps around a piercing, while others form broad, firm bands or extend in an irregular shape beyond an injury. They may be pink, red, brown, or darker than nearby skin, and colour can change as they mature. Symptoms range from no discomfort to itching, tenderness, tightness, or pain. A scar that stays within the original wound is more consistent with a hypertrophic scar, while a keloid grows outside it; an examination is needed because other skin lumps can look similar.

Do not cut, puncture, burn, or squeeze a raised scar at home. Note when it began, whether it is expanding, and whether clothing, jewellery, or movement irritates it. Treatment may involve silicone or pressure, steroid injections, laser treatment, freezing, or surgery, with the body site and scar thickness shaping the plan. A darker or recently inflamed scar may need careful attention to colour change during healing.

Seek review for a rapidly changing lump, unexplained bleeding, an open area, persistent discharge, or pain that is increasing. Prompt care is appropriate when redness and warmth spread or fever develops. A scar near an eye, mouth, joint, or piercing should be assessed if it affects movement, vision, comfort, or jewellery.

Ask whether the lesion is a keloid or another scar type, what features make it active, and how its location affects treatment. Ask how recurrence will be watched after treatment.
