Keloid treatment before and after: what to expect

Before treatment, a clinician checks whether the lump is a keloid, how far it extends beyond the original injury, and whether it is itchy, tender, or changing. After treatment, the area may be swollen, red, darker, lighter, crusted, or sensitive while skin repairs itself. A flatter appearance does not always mean the scar is fully settled; collagen can continue remodeling for months, and keloids may return after treatment.

Tell the clinician about previous scars, skin sensitivity, medicines, and treatments that have failed. Follow the wound-care plan closely: keep the treated area clean, avoid picking or rubbing it, protect it from strong sunlight, and use only dressings or silicone products recommended for your skin. Depending on the scar, care may include steroid injections, pressure or silicone, laser treatment, freezing, or surgery combined with another method. Photos taken in similar lighting can show gradual change more reliably than daily checks.

Contact the treating clinic if pain, warmth, swelling, drainage, or redness is worsening rather than settling, or if the wound opens. Seek prompt assessment for fever, spreading redness, sudden bleeding, or a rapidly enlarging lump. A new or changing lump should be examined instead of being treated at home.

Ask what result is realistic for this scar, how many visits may be needed, which combination lowers the chance of regrowth, and how long to protect the area from sun. Ask when exercise, shaving, cosmetics, or swimming can resume.
