What should you know about keloid sheets?

A keloid is an overgrown scar that extends past the original injury. A sheet may cover the area, reduce rubbing, and help maintain a stable environment over a closed scar. It cannot diagnose a lump, repair an open wound, or guarantee that a mature keloid will flatten. The material, fit, adhesive, and skin condition all affect whether it is suitable.

Use a clean sheet only on skin that has fully closed and is free of drainage. Follow the product's wear and cleaning directions, trim it to cover the scar without pressing onto surrounding irritated skin, and check the area regularly. Stop if you develop a rash, blistering, marked soreness, or worsening itch. A clinician may suggest silicone or pressure care, injections, laser treatment, or another approach based on the scar's behaviour.

Have a growing, painful, bleeding, or uncertain lump examined before covering it. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, or rapid change. If a sheet repeatedly irritates the skin or the scar continues to enlarge, a dermatologist can reassess the diagnosis and treatment plan.

Ask whether the lesion is ready for a sheet, which material and wear pattern fit its location, and what to do if adhesive causes irritation. Ask how progress will be judged and when treatment should be changed.
