What should you know about keloid reduction?

A keloid is scar tissue that extends beyond the original wound. Reduction may mean making it flatter, less firm, less itchy, less painful, or less visible; it does not necessarily mean removing every trace of the scar. The response depends on its age, size, thickness, location, skin characteristics, and whether it has been treated before.

A raised mark that stays within the original injury may be a hypertrophic scar rather than a keloid. A clinician can examine the border and history before recommending treatment.

A treatment plan may use steroid medicine injected into the scar to soften and flatten it. Laser treatment can be considered for selected colour or texture concerns, while freezing treatment may be useful for some smaller lesions. Surgical removal can be discussed for a bulky or function-limiting keloid, usually with additional measures to reduce the chance of regrowth.

Do not cut, burn, squeeze, or repeatedly scratch the area. Reduce friction and seek advice early if the scar is enlarging, because symptoms and growth pattern help shape the plan. Follow-up visits may be needed to judge change and adjust treatment.

Arrange a dermatology review for a keloid that grows, becomes painful or itchy, restricts movement, or catches on clothing. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, sudden swelling, or persistent bleeding.
