What should you know about keloid neck?

Keloids form when healing produces more scar tissue than the original wound needs. On the neck, a raised mark may follow acne, a cut, an injection, surgery, or another skin injury. It can feel hard or rubbery and may cause itching, tenderness, tightness, or cosmetic concern. A scar that stays within the wound is different from a keloid that spreads beyond it. Sudden warmth, discharge, and spreading redness point toward infection and need separate evaluation.

Avoid scratching, shaving directly over an irritated bump, or applying untested acids and steroid creams. Protect the neck from collars, chains, and repeated rubbing while arranging a dermatology review. Treatment may involve intralesional steroid injection, cryotherapy, laser treatment, or surgery; clinicians weigh the scar's position, thickness, symptoms, skin colour, and history of growth before choosing an approach. A neck scar may also need planning around movement and visibility.

Arrange an appointment when the scar enlarges, becomes persistently itchy or painful, or limits comfortable neck movement. Seek prompt care for rapid swelling, spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, or severe pain. If a lump appears without a clear injury or changes quickly, it also deserves an examination rather than self-treatment.

Ask what caused the scar, whether it is active, which option suits its depth and location, how treatment may affect neck movement or skin colour, and what protection is needed afterward.
