What should you know about k9 hydrotherapy?

Short answer

Hydrotherapy uses warm water, buoyancy, and guided exercise to support movement when land-based activity is difficult.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What happens in hydrotherapy

A physiotherapist selects movements in a heated pool, where buoyancy can reduce the load felt by joints and water resistance can provide a gradual strengthening challenge. Sessions may include walking, balance practice, mobility work, or controlled strengthening. The pool environment can help someone practise movement with less fear of aggravating symptoms, but it is still active rehabilitation. Hydrotherapy may be considered for joint pain or stiffness and may support care for ankylosing spondylitis, fibromyalgia, or frozen shoulder when clinically suitable.

Preparing for a session

Tell the therapist about pain, dizziness, skin problems, recent surgery, open wounds, continence concerns, heart or breathing conditions, and fear of water. Wear suitable swimwear and follow pool hygiene instructions. Move at the pace prescribed, use the handrail when advised, and drink fluids afterward. A therapist may combine pool work with home exercises or land-based Exercise Therapy as your strength and confidence improve. A Hydrotherapy Pool is different from unsupervised swimming because the exercises and depth are selected for your goals.

When to pause or seek help

Tell the therapist immediately if you feel faint, unusually breathless, develop chest discomfort, or lose balance in the water. Stop and seek medical advice for a new severe pain flare, wound problems, fever, or symptoms suggesting infection. Do not enter a shared pool with an open wound or illness until a clinician confirms it is appropriate.

Questions to ask

Is aquatic exercise suitable for my condition and current mobility? What movements should I practise in the pool? How will progress be measured, and when might land exercises be added? Are there medical, skin, or wound precautions that affect pool attendance?

Questions people ask

Is hydrotherapy the same as swimming?

No. Hydrotherapy is a planned rehabilitation session with specific exercises, supervision, and safety checks.

Can hydrotherapy replace all physiotherapy?

It may be one part of rehabilitation; many people also need home exercises, strength work, or functional practice on land.
