What should you know about jaundice blue light treatment?

Phototherapy uses a special blue light to change bilirubin into forms the body can remove through urine and stools. The baby usually wears eye protection and has as much skin exposed as practical, while temperature, feeding, hydration, and bilirubin levels are monitored. Treatment is not the right answer for every yellow appearance. In an older child or adult, jaundice may reflect a liver, blood, gallbladder, or bile-duct problem, including hepatitis or gallstones, so blue light should not be started without medical advice.

Follow the maternity or paediatric team’s instructions about keeping the baby under the light and taking feeding breaks. Feed as advised and tell the team if the baby is difficult to wake, feeds poorly, has fewer wet nappies, or seems unusually irritable. Do not use household lamps, sunlight, or tanning equipment as substitutes. Ask which bilirubin measurements are being followed and when the baby needs another check after treatment. Any jaundice in an adult needs evaluation of the underlying cause.

Get urgent medical help if a jaundiced baby is very sleepy, floppy, difficult to feed, has a high-pitched cry, breathing difficulty, fever, or worsening yellowing. Seek immediate care for jaundice with confusion, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding, or marked weakness. Yellow skin with dark urine or pale stools also warrants prompt review.
