What should you know about IV fluid replacement therapy?

A cannula connects you to a bag of fluid selected for your condition. The clinician considers the likely cause, blood pressure, pulse, urine output, ability to drink, and conditions that affect fluid handling. Treatment may be considered with Dehydration, Food Poisoning, Gastroenteritis, or Heat Exhaustion, but the underlying illness still needs attention.

Fluids are not automatically harmless. The team watches for worsening breathlessness, swelling, pain at the cannula, or a reaction. People with heart or kidney problems may need especially careful selection and monitoring. Severe infection, including Sepsis, needs urgent medical care rather than a wellness-style infusion.

Tell the clinician about vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, medicines, pregnancy, and heart or kidney disease. If you can swallow safely, small frequent sips may help while arranging advice; avoid forcing drinks when vomiting is persistent. Track whether you are passing urine and report worsening Excessive Thirst, Nausea, or Dizziness. Rest and follow the discharge instructions after treatment.

Seek emergency help for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, difficulty breathing, blue or clammy skin, blood in vomit or stool, or inability to keep fluids down. A child, older adult, pregnant person, or someone with a serious chronic illness may need earlier assessment when fluid loss is developing.
