What should you know about an IV drip for dehydration?

Dehydration means the body has lost more fluid than it has taken in. A clinician chooses an IV fluid based on your examination, symptoms, medical history, and sometimes blood or urine tests. Fluid may be useful when repeated vomiting, severe diarrhoea, heat exposure, or another illness prevents adequate drinking.

The drip treats fluid loss, not necessarily its trigger. Gastroenteritis and Heat Exhaustion can both cause dehydration, while dark urine may be a clue that fluid intake is low. Kidney, heart, or liver problems can make fluid treatment more complex, so unsupervised infusions are unsafe.

If you can swallow and are not vomiting repeatedly, take frequent small sips; an oral rehydration solution may replace water and salts more effectively than plain water in some illnesses. Rest in a cool place after heat exposure and follow advice about diarrhoea or vomiting. Tell the clinician about kidney or heart disease and medicines that affect fluid balance.

During an infusion, report pain, swelling, breathlessness, chills, or a new rash. The team may monitor your pulse, blood pressure, urine output, and symptoms before deciding whether more fluid is appropriate.

Seek urgent care for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, inability to keep fluids down, very little urine, blood in vomit or stool, severe abdominal pain, or worsening symptoms after heat exposure. A child, older adult, pregnant person, or someone with a serious long-term condition may need earlier assessment.
