What should you know about IV corticosteroids for asthma?

Corticosteroids calm inflammation and swelling in the airways. Giving them into a vein allows treatment when a person is very unwell, vomiting, exhausted, or unable to absorb or use medicine by mouth. They do not instantly open narrowed airways, so clinicians may also use oxygen, inhaled medicines, or a Nebuliser Treatment.

Asthma commonly presents with symptoms such as Wheezing, Cough, and Chest Tightness, but those symptoms can have other causes. The team checks breathing effort, oxygen level, examination findings, and response to treatment before deciding the route and dose.

Follow your written asthma plan and use your reliever exactly as prescribed while arranging medical help. Tell clinicians about steroid use, diabetes, high blood pressure, infections, pregnancy, and regular medicines. Do not delay emergency assessment while waiting for an infusion to be arranged.

After improvement, ask how long to continue any prescribed steroid course and whether your preventer inhaler technique needs review. Reduce exposure to known triggers, including smoke, dust, or allergens such as House Dust Mite Allergy when relevant.

Call emergency services if breathing is rapidly worsening, speaking is difficult, lips look blue or grey, you are drowsy or confused, or your reliever is not helping. Severe asthma can deteriorate quickly even when wheezing becomes quieter.
