Itchy Throat and Inside Ears: What to Know

The nose, throat and middle ear are connected by nearby passages, so inflammation in the upper airway can create sensations in more than one place. Allergic rhinitis may cause itching, sneezing, a watery nose and ear discomfort. A common cold can irritate the throat and cause congestion, although fever, cough or tiredness may be more noticeable. House dust mite exposure, seasonal pollen or an animal allergen can keep symptoms recurring indoors or outdoors. Food allergy can cause mouth or throat itching soon after eating and may also cause hives, swelling, vomiting or breathing symptoms.

Avoid putting cotton buds, drops or other objects deep into the ear unless a clinician has advised this. Scratching can inflame delicate skin and increase the chance of infection.

Notice when symptoms begin, such as after cleaning, being outdoors, waking in a dusty room or eating a particular food. Reduce the suspected trigger where practical, drink fluids, and use gentle saline nasal rinsing if it is suitable for you. A pharmacist or clinician can explain whether allergy medication fits your symptoms, health conditions and other medicines. Do not test a suspected food allergy by eating the food again without medical advice.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, throat tightness, difficulty swallowing, sudden lip or tongue swelling, faintness, or rapidly spreading hives, particularly after food or medicine. Arrange a medical review for ear pain, discharge, reduced hearing, persistent fever, severe throat pain, or symptoms that keep returning. A clinician can examine the ears and throat and separate allergy from infection or another cause.
