Dry throat and itchy ears: what should you know?

Allergic rhinitis may irritate the nose, throat, and the passages connected to the ears. Dust mites, pets, and seasonal particles can produce itching, sneezing, congestion, watery eyes, or a tickling sensation in the ears. A cold can cause throat dryness and blocked ears as nasal tissues swell. Food allergy is a different pattern: symptoms may begin soon after eating and can include mouth or throat itching, hives, vomiting, or swelling. Irritants such as smoke and dry indoor air can add dryness without causing allergy.

Drink water, avoid smoke and fragranced products, and keep indoor air comfortably humid. Saline nasal spray may ease congestion. Do not put cotton buds, oils, or other objects into the ear canal, because this can injure skin or push wax deeper. If symptoms follow a repeatable exposure, record the setting and timing. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether allergy medication is appropriate for you.

Seek urgent help for throat or tongue swelling, wheezing, faintness, widespread hives, or difficulty swallowing. Arrange an appointment for ear pain, discharge, reduced hearing, fever, one-sided symptoms, or symptoms that persist or repeatedly disrupt sleep. Symptoms soon after a food require particular caution, even if they first seem mild.
