Itchy Scalp With Pimples: Possible Causes and Next Steps

Small itchy bumps centred on hairs can occur with folliculitis. Sweat, friction from hats, occlusive oils, and residue from styling products may contribute. A rash from a new dye or cleanser can also itch and look bumpy. Flakes may point toward dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis, while thick plaques suggest that scalp psoriasis should be considered. Head lice usually cause intense itching and may leave scratch marks, but they are not diagnosed from pimples alone.

Describe whether the bumps are tender, filled with pus, clustered, or associated with flakes. Do not squeeze them: pressure can worsen inflammation and damage the skin.

Wash gently after sweating, keep hats and pillowcases clean, and stop new oils, pomades, sprays, or dyes until the cause is clearer. Avoid picking, close shaving over inflamed areas, and sharing combs. Do not apply acne medicines or strong antiseptics to the scalp without advice. A clinician may recommend a suitable cleanser, medicated shampoo, or other treatment after examining the bumps; use any product exactly as directed.

Arrange care if bumps persist, recur, spread, drain pus, form crusts, or cause pain or hair loss.
