Itchy scalp postpartum: what to check

Short answer
Postpartum itchy scalp may reflect dryness, product irritation, dandruff, dermatitis, psoriasis, folliculitis, or lice rather than one single cause.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Track changes
- Note washing, products, scalp scale, bumps, hair shedding, and household exposure.
- Treatment check
- Discuss breastfeeding and medicines before using a medicated scalp product.
What may be happening
After delivery, caring for a newborn can change bathing, hair care, sleep, and exposure to household contacts. A scalp that is oily, flaky, dry, or sensitive may itch for different reasons. Seborrheic Dermatitis often involves greasy scale and redness; Dandruff may present with scalp flaking; Scalp Psoriasis can form sharply outlined thicker areas. Folliculitis produces irritated or tender hair follicles. Head Lice is considered when live lice or firmly attached eggs are found, particularly after close contact. Postpartum timing alone does not identify the cause.
A low-irritation routine
Wash gently and rinse well, using lukewarm rather than hot water. Stop any recently added dye, fragrance, oil, or styling product and reintroduce items one by one only after the scalp improves. Do not scrape scale or squeeze bumps. If a clinician recommends Medicated Shampoo Treatment, follow the product directions and mention breastfeeding or other medicines before starting. Keep personal combs and brushes separate if lice is suspected, and write down associated redness, scale, bumps, or hair shedding.
When to get checked
Contact a dermatologist if the itch remains troublesome, affects sleep, causes bleeding or hair loss, or fails to settle with gentle care. Seek urgent medical attention for fever, pus, increasing warmth, severe pain, marked swelling, or redness that spreads quickly. An examination can identify whether the symptom belongs to Seborrheic Dermatitis, Scalp Psoriasis, Folliculitis, a product reaction, or another problem.
Questions to ask
What features distinguish my scalp problem from Dandruff or lice? Are any treatments unsuitable while breastfeeding? How should I manage broken skin, and what change should prompt a follow-up visit?
