Itchy scalp and greasy hair: what it can mean

Oil on the scalp can combine with shed skin and create greasy flakes, itch, or an unpleasant coating. Seborrheic dermatitis commonly affects oily scalp skin and may also involve the eyebrows, ears, or sides of the nose. Styling products can leave residue that feels itchy, while folliculitis may cause sore, pimple-like bumps. Head lice cause itch but are identified by live lice or firmly attached nits, not by greasy hair alone.

Wash often enough to remove oil and product residue, using a gentle shampoo and thorough rinsing. Apply conditioner mainly to the hair lengths if the roots become heavy. Avoid scratching, tight headwear, and heavy oils on the scalp. If flakes continue, ask a pharmacist or clinician whether a medicated shampoo fits your symptoms; use it as directed and stop if it causes marked irritation.

Arrange an assessment if itch persists despite a consistent routine, or if you notice painful bumps, pus, thick plaques, patchy hair loss, or sores.
