Itchy scalp after hair dye: what to do

Dye chemicals can irritate already-sensitive skin or trigger a delayed immune reaction. Symptoms may affect the scalp, hairline, ears, eyelids, or neck, and can appear after the colour has been rinsed away. Burning during application suggests irritation, while worsening itch, redness, or swelling later can fit contact dermatitis. If there is heavy scale between dye sessions, another condition such as dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis may be contributing.

Rinse the scalp thoroughly with lukewarm water and stop using the product. Avoid applying another dye, bleach, fragrance, or styling treatment until the skin has recovered. Do not scratch or scrub the area. Keep the product box or ingredient list for a clinician, and photograph the rash if it changes. A pharmacist or doctor can advise whether a soothing treatment or prescribed medicine is appropriate for the affected area.

Seek urgent help for swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, wheezing, dizziness, or trouble breathing. Arrange prompt medical review for blistering, severe pain, oozing, rapidly spreading redness, or eye involvement. Recurrent reactions deserve assessment before another colouring appointment, even if the first episode improved.
