Itchy Scalp and Dermatitis

Contact dermatitis can follow hair dye, fragrance, preservatives, oils, or a new styling product. The scalp may feel hot or sting, and the rash can extend to the forehead, ears, or neck. Seborrheic dermatitis more often produces recurring scale in oily areas, while scalp psoriasis can create thicker, well-defined plaques. These patterns overlap, so the timing of exposure and the appearance matter.

Stop a newly introduced product and keep its packaging or ingredient list for the consultation. Rinse the scalp thoroughly, use a fragrance-free cleanser, and avoid hot water, vigorous brushing, and scratching. Do not apply a strong steroid or other prescription medicine without guidance, because the scalp diagnosis and suitable duration affect safe use. A clinician may recommend a medicated shampoo or a targeted anti-inflammatory treatment.

Seek prompt help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, extensive blistering, or rapidly spreading redness after a product. Arrange an appointment if the rash is painful, oozing, associated with hair loss, or not settling after the suspected trigger is removed. Recurrent episodes may need patch testing or a closer review of products used on the scalp and hairline.

Ask whether the pattern is contact dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, or infection; which ingredients to avoid; whether patch testing is appropriate; and which treatment is safe around the eyes, ears, or face.
