Itchy scalp and bumps: what they can mean

Small tender or pus-filled bumps around hairs can occur with Folliculitis. Flaking with greasy scale may fit Seborrheic Dermatitis or Dandruff, while thick, sharply defined scale can occur with Scalp Psoriasis. Very itchy spots, especially with crawling insects or attached eggs near the hair shaft, can point to Head Lice. New shampoo, hair dye, oils, or styling products may instead irritate the skin. Scratching can enlarge bumps and create breaks that become infected.

Pause any recently introduced hair product and wash gently with lukewarm water. Avoid scratching, picking, tight hairstyles, and sharing combs, hats, or pillows until lice has been excluded. Note whether the bumps are painful, scaly, clustered, or spreading, and take a clear photograph before treatment.
