Itchy, Irritated Eye: What to Know

Itching with watering and sneezing can fit allergy. Grittiness may occur with dryness or surface irritation from smoke, dust, cosmetics, or contact lenses. Sticky discharge, marked redness, or eyelid crusting can occur with infection or inflammation. A rash or swelling around the eye may follow a product reaction.

Do not assume an itchy eye is a skin condition. The eye surface is delicate, and symptoms can overlap. Contact-lens wear, recent injury, chemical exposure, and one-sided symptoms are useful details for a clinician.

Wash your hands before touching the area and avoid rubbing. Remove contact lenses and do not wear them again until symptoms have settled and a clinician says it is suitable. A clean cool compress may ease itch and swelling. If dust or a mild irritant entered the eye, rinse with clean running water; do not try to scrape the surface.

Avoid sharing towels, eye makeup, or drops, and discard eye cosmetics used during an infection. Do not use steroid eye drops or someone else's prescription. A pharmacist or eye clinician can advise on suitable lubricating or allergy drops.

Seek urgent eye care for pain, light sensitivity, blurred or reduced vision, a visible injury, chemical exposure, severe swelling, or a sensation that will not clear. Get emergency help for sudden vision loss, severe headache with eye symptoms, or swelling with breathing difficulty. Arrange a routine review if redness or discharge persists or keeps returning.

Ask whether the symptoms fit allergy, dryness, infection, eyelid inflammation, or a scratched surface. Mention contact-lens use, new cosmetics, discharge, light sensitivity, and any change in vision. Ask which drops are suitable and when lenses can be worn again.
