Itchy Eyes During Perimenopause: What to Know

Short answer
Itchy eyes during perimenopause may be linked to hormonal changes and dry-eye irritation, although allergy, infection and contact-lens problems are also possible.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Possible contributor
- A less stable tear film
- Avoid during a flare
- Eye rubbing and contact lenses
Why eyes can feel different
Hormonal fluctuation can affect the tear film and the eyelids, making evaporation and irritation more noticeable. Screen use, air conditioning, smoke, dust, cosmetics and contact lenses can amplify symptoms. Itchy eyes with sneezing and clear watering may fit allergy; sticky discharge, marked redness or eyelid swelling suggests infection or another eye problem. Perimenopause can also bring [Irregular Periods](/symptoms/irregular-periods/), [Hot Flushes](/symptoms/hot-flushes/) and [Night Sweats](/symptoms/night-sweats/), but those symptoms do not diagnose the eye complaint.
Steps that may help
Use a clean cool compress over closed eyes and take regular screen breaks. Keep water, smoke and fragranced products away from the eyes, and remove eye makeup before sleep. Contact-lens wearers should switch to glasses while irritated and follow lens hygiene instructions. Lubricating eye drops may help some people; ask a pharmacist which type suits you, especially if you use other eye medicines. Do not rub your eyes or share towels.
When to seek care
Arrange an eye or medical review if symptoms persist, keep returning, affect vision or occur with pain, discharge, marked redness, eyelid swelling or light sensitivity. Seek urgent help for sudden vision loss, severe eye pain, an eye injury, chemical exposure, or a red painful eye while wearing contact lenses. A clinician can check the surface of the eye and choose treatment based on the cause.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms fit dry eye, allergy, infection or a contact-lens issue; whether you should use lubricating drops; and whether any medicines or menopause treatment could contribute. Tell them about vision changes, discharge, screen time, allergies, contact lenses and other symptoms such as [Missed Period](/symptoms/missed-period/) or mood changes.
