Itchy eyes and cat allergy: what to know

Cat allergy is a reaction to proteins found in cat skin flakes, saliva, and other particles that can spread through a home. Contact with these allergens may activate inflammation in the thin covering of the eye, causing itching, redness, tearing, or puffy eyelids. This pattern is consistent with allergic conjunctivitis. A cat does not need to be in the room at the moment symptoms begin, because allergens can remain on clothing, furniture, and bedding.

Allergy symptoms may occur alongside a blocked or runny nose, sneezing, or an itchy throat. Itchy eyes alone do not prove that a cat is the cause; dust mites, pollen, irritants, dry eyes, and infection can feel similar.

Avoid rubbing your eyes, since rubbing can increase irritation and swelling. Wash your hands after touching a cat and keep hands away from your face until they are clean. Use a clean, cool compress over closed eyelids for comfort. Reducing allergen build-up may involve keeping the bedroom cat-free, washing bedding regularly, and cleaning surfaces with methods that do not simply stir dust into the air.

Arrange medical advice if symptoms keep returning, interfere with sleep or work, or do not settle after avoiding the suspected trigger.
