Itchy ears and scalp: what to know

Flaking around the scalp, eyebrows, or behind the ears can fit Dandruff or Seborrheic Dermatitis. Thick, well-defined scale may suggest Scalp Psoriasis. Small tender bumps around hairs can occur with Folliculitis. Intense itch with attached nits or a close-contact history raises the possibility of Head Lice. Ear-canal itch may follow earbuds, hearing devices, water exposure, or products; inserting cotton swabs can worsen irritation. These clues guide assessment but do not replace an examination.

Use a gentle shampoo and rinse thoroughly. Do not scratch with nails or insert cotton swabs, oils, or objects into the ear canal. Wash or replace irritating hair products and clean reusable earbuds as directed. If a clinician recommends Medicated Shampoo Treatment, follow the label and allow contact time as instructed. Suspected lice needs a suitable Head Lice Treatment and checking of close contacts; do not treat repeatedly without confirming the cause.
