Itchy Bumps on Scalp and Neck: What They May Mean

Small bumps centred on hairs can occur when follicles become inflamed, especially after sweating, friction, shaving, or heavy hair products. Flaking or greasy scale can fit dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis. Thick, sharply defined scale may occur with scalp psoriasis. Persistent itching with visible nits or crawling insects raises concern for head lice. A rash at the hairline or neck can also follow a new dye, shampoo, fragrance, helmet, or collar.

The appearance alone cannot identify the cause. Note whether the bumps are tender, crusted, scaly, clustered, or spreading, and whether anyone close to you is itchy.

Avoid scratching, picking, fragranced products, and tight headwear while the skin settles. Wash gently with lukewarm water, keep pillowcases and hats clean, and pause any newly introduced hair product. Do not share combs, brushes, hats, or towels if lice are possible. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether a medicated shampoo or targeted treatment fits the findings; follow its directions and avoid applying products to broken skin unless instructed.

Arrange a medical assessment if bumps are painful, draining pus, crusting, causing patchy hair loss, or failing to improve after sensible self-care. Seek urgent help for rapidly spreading redness, marked swelling, fever, severe pain, or swelling around the eyes. Breathing difficulty or swelling of the lips or tongue needs emergency care.

Ask which features point to folliculitis, dandruff, psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, or lice; whether a scalp examination or sample is needed; and which products should be stopped or used. Mention recent hair treatments, close contacts with itching, and any hair loss.
