Is spinal fusion done with a PEEK spinal cage?

A cage is placed in the space between vertebrae after a disc or damaged tissue is removed. It helps maintain the planned spacing and gives bone graft material a contained area in which fusion can develop. PEEK, or polyether ether ketone, is a strong medical polymer used in some cages. The cage is only one part of the operation; screws, rods, plates or other supports may also be used, depending on the approach and the segment being treated.

The choice is not automatic for every fusion. The surgeon weighs bone quality, alignment, imaging findings, previous operations and the intended route into the spine. A PEEK cage may also have a surface or design intended to support contact with bone, but the exact device must match the person’s anatomy.
