Is Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Done with Point-of-Care Ultrasound?

Point-of-care ultrasound is performed near the patient during an assessment rather than only in a separate imaging department. A clinician can examine superficial tendons, muscles, fluid collections, some ligaments, and joint movement in real time. The probe may be moved while you bend or rotate a joint, allowing comparison between sides or positions. The view is limited by depth, bone, swelling, and operator experience, so a formal ultrasound, X-ray, MRI, or other test may still be needed.

Wear clothing that allows access to the painful area and explain exactly where symptoms occur. You may be asked to move the joint or contract a muscle while gel and a probe are applied to the skin. The pressure is usually adjusted to your comfort, but tell the clinician if it increases pain. Ask whether the scan is being used to answer a focused question or to plan a procedure, and how its findings will fit with your examination.

Do not rely on an ultrasound appointment alone if an injury causes a visible deformity, inability to bear weight, sudden weakness, marked swelling, numbness, or a cold or discoloured limb. Seek urgent assessment for those symptoms. If pain persists despite initial care, arrange follow-up even when a point-of-care scan is reassuring, because some deeper or bone-related problems may not be fully visible with ultrasound.

Ask what structure will be examined, whether movement will be assessed, what the scan cannot show, and whether another imaging test is needed.
