Is loop excision of the cervix done with a colposcope?

A colposcope is a lighted viewing instrument that stays outside the vagina. A speculum gently holds the vaginal walls apart while the clinician examines the cervix through the colposcope. Solutions may be applied to make areas of changed tissue easier to see. A thin wire loop then removes a small section of cervical tissue, which can be examined in the laboratory. The colposcope guides the clinician; it does not enter the body and it does not perform the excision itself.

Tell the clinic about pregnancy, bleeding disorders, allergies, and medicines that affect bleeding. Follow any instructions about timing the procedure and pain relief. During recovery, light bleeding, discharge, or period-like cramping may occur. Use the aftercare products and activity restrictions recommended by your clinician, and attend the appointment arranged to discuss the tissue result. Ask when you can use tampons, have penetrative sex, swim, or exercise.

Call the clinic if bleeding becomes heavier than expected, develops a strong unpleasant smell, or continues with increasing pain or fever. Seek urgent care for very heavy bleeding, severe pelvic pain, fainting, or feeling seriously unwell. A small amount of bleeding can be part of healing, but a sudden change needs assessment.

Ask what area will be removed, what anaesthetic is planned, and how the colposcope will be used during the procedure. Also ask when results are expected, how follow-up will check the cervix, and what symptoms should prompt a call.
