Is intravesical BCG therapy done with BCG solution?

BCG is a form of immunotherapy used inside the bladder, rather than being given through a vein. A healthcare professional inserts a soft catheter through the urethra and slowly instils the solution. The catheter is then removed, and you may be asked to keep the solution in your bladder for a planned period before urinating. The treatment is intended to let BCG contact the bladder lining, where it can stimulate a local immune response.

The preparation, amount, schedule, and instructions can vary with your treatment plan. BCG solution is not the same as an ordinary medicine mixed at home, so it should only be handled and administered by the treating team.

Follow the clinic's instructions about medicines, fluids, and urination before each visit. Tell the team if you have a urinary infection, fever, blood in your urine, difficulty passing urine, or recent bladder procedures. After treatment, follow the hygiene and toilet instructions you receive, including any advice about cleaning splashes and handwashing. Drink fluids as directed once the team says it is appropriate.

Contact your oncology or urology team promptly for a persistent fever, chills, worsening pain, inability to pass urine, heavy bleeding, or feeling very unwell after BCG. These symptoms need assessment because they can reflect infection, irritation, or a less common reaction that requires treatment.

Ask which BCG schedule you will follow, how long to retain the solution, which symptoms are expected, and whom to call outside clinic hours. You can also ask when to restart usual activities and whether any of your medicines need special instructions.
