Is COVID-19 gone?

COVID-19 is an infection caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Its activity changes over time, and people can still become ill or pass the virus to others. Symptoms may include fever, cough, headache, fatigue, or feeling generally unwell. Some people recover without complications, while others develop breathing problems or pneumonia. Symptoms that continue after the initial illness may need assessment for Long COVID.

If you have symptoms, rest, drink fluids, and limit close contact while you feel unwell. Improve ventilation and consider a mask when you must be near other people, especially those more likely to become seriously ill. Follow local testing and public-health advice, and ask a clinician promptly about treatment if you have medical conditions that increase risk. Do not share personal items when someone at home is ill.

Seek urgent medical help for severe difficulty breathing, chest pain or pressure, new confusion, unusual difficulty waking, or lips or skin that look blue or grey. Contact a clinician if fever persists, symptoms worsen after improving, breathing becomes harder, or weakness prevents normal activities. A new or worsening cough with breathlessness can signal a complication such as pneumonia.

Ask which symptoms should prompt a same-day review, whether you need a COVID-19 test, and how your existing medicines or health conditions affect treatment choices. If symptoms continue, ask what follow-up is appropriate and when you can safely resume close contact with others.
