Irregular period after tubal ligation

Tubal ligation blocks, seals, or removes sections of the fallopian tubes. It does not normally switch off ovarian hormone production or the uterine lining changes that create a period. A cycle that becomes irregular afterward may reflect age-related hormone changes, stress, illness, weight change, anovulation, or another condition rather than the sterilisation procedure. Pregnancy is uncommon after tubal ligation but can occur, and a pregnancy after the procedure needs prompt evaluation because ectopic pregnancy is a concern.

Record the timing, amount, and duration of bleeding, plus pelvic pain, dizziness, discharge, and the date of the procedure. Take a pregnancy test for a late or unusual period, even after sterilisation. Arrange a routine appointment if the pattern continues or is affecting daily life; bring your cycle record and operation details if available. A clinician may review other medicines and health changes and decide whether examination, pregnancy testing, blood tests, or imaging is useful. Go to urgent care for severe or one-sided lower-abdominal pain, fainting, shoulder-tip pain, or heavy bleeding with dizziness or weakness. Seek prompt review for a positive pregnancy test with pain or bleeding, fever, or worsening pelvic tenderness. Because pregnancy after tubal ligation can be ectopic, pain and bleeding should not be dismissed as a routine period change.

Ask whether pregnancy testing or an ultrasound is needed, whether your bleeding pattern suggests ovulation or another hormonal change, and which non-contraceptive treatments could help.
